1

Palermo

Palermo is the capital of the Italian island of Sicily. The 12th-century Palermo Cathedral houses royal tombs, while the huge neoclassical Teatro Massimo is known for opera performances. Also in the center are the Palazzo dei Normanni, a royal palace started in the 9th century, and the Cappella Palatina, with Byzantine mosaics. Busy markets include the central Ballarò street market and the Vucciria, near the port.

Slide 1 of 2

In Palermo, Catania, Cefalu and Agrigento, you can easily find street food stalls and budget eateries. Ortigia and Taormina are much classier and popular with tourists and as such, you should expect to find restaurants averaging at around £15-£20 per person for a meal. If you are travelling Sicily on a budget, I would recommend staying at an airbnb in Syracuse and cooking for yourself. When you travel to Taormina, it is much cheaper to stay overnight in Catania and take a day trip to Taormina (Only 6 euros and one hour on the train), as opposed to staying at a hotel in Taormina.

Our last stop in Sicily was the capital, Palermo. The city has contrasting fame as historically very aristocratic but more recently rife with Mafia. The mafia isn’t something that’s obviously on show in Sicily and it certainly didn’t feel like a tourist attraction in any way. To spot the influence of the Mafia in Sicily you’d have to do your research and know where to look.

Slide 1 of 3

The Royal Palace and Bosco Ficuzza (Ficuzza Forest) is an extremely beautiful place, where art and nature integrates perfectly. The area was born as a hunting reserve for Ferdinand III of Bourbon, in the nineteenth century and presents a great variety of environments. The palace itself stands in front of central park of the small village part of Corleone Municipality and is dominated by the impressive, 3 km long, Rocca Busambra wall. As I like climbing, I had the chance to see the palace both from the ground and the top of Busambra (1613m). I also had the chance to witness a genuine Corleonese matrimonio (wedding), in front of the impressive building. I might be biased, but is one of the most romantic places I've seen!

Very interesting tour, guide spoke excellent language. Apparently it's free, but felt like it was worth money. Can be a bit boring for the kids, but all in all well worth a visit!

Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio

Domed Norman-era church with ornate baroque remodelling known for its landmark Byzantine mosaics.

Slide 1 of 5

Be sure not to miss the Palermo cathedral (“duomo”), the Palatine chapel, La Matorana and the fascinating San Giovanni degli Eremiti, whose dome shaped roofs were once an Arabic mosque. Witness local life and try Sicilian street food delicacies such as arancini rice balls and crochette di patate at the various local markets. Capo, Ballaro and Vucciria are interesting marketplaces to watch locals haggling with vendors for their ingredients for Sunday dinner. When the sun goes down, head to the seafront at La Cala to enjoy an aperitivo with views over the marina.

Distinguished by an elegant Norman campanile, this church was erected in 1143 but had its interior altered considerably during the Baroque…

Magnificent church originally built in 12th century by Normans in Byzantine/Islamic style. Half of it was painted over with baroque scenes, while the other is ancient and much more interesting (adorned with countless mosaics). Here and there you find columns inscribed with Arabic characters. Visitors entry is possible only for a few hours in a few days, so be sure you check its schedule!

Gorgeous church. Incredible mosaics.

Visited this place today. We paid 2.5€ for entrance, but it was 2x2 room with literary nothing to see. It is fraud. The thing is they cover entrance with curtain, so you can not see for what you pay until you actually pay and come inside. It is on the right upstairs. Do not go there. It appeared it is not main church, we did not know that and no one told us.

Taking over 20 years to complete, Palermo's neoclassical opera house is the largest in Italy and the second-largest in Europe. The closing scene of The Godfather: Part III, with its visually arresting juxtaposition of high culture, crime, drama and death, was filmed here and the building's richly decorated interiors are nothing short of spectacular. Guided 30-minute tours are offered throughout the day in English, Italian, French, Spanish and German.

Palermo’s beautiful opera house, the Teatro Massimo, is the largest opera house in the entire country. It’s an important landmark in the center of historic Palermo, and even if you don’t like opera you may be familiar with the theater’s imposing front staircase. The Teatro Massimo was built in the late 1800s, opening in 1897 with a production of “Falstaff” by Giuseppe Verdi.

Located in the heart of the city of Palermo, the Teatro Massimo was a wonder when it was built. It still remains one of the largest opera houses in Europe, and it can seat over 1,300 people. You can take a tour and gain some knowledge on the neoclassical architecture, or you can attend one of the many performances that take place here throughout the year.

Cattedrale di Palermo

Cathedral

Sights & Landmarks

4 bell towers top this architecturally diverse church dating from the 1100s & housing royal tombs.

Slide 1 of 10

A feast of geometric patterns, ziggurat crenellations, maiolica cupolas and blind arches, Palermo's cathedral has suffered aesthetically from multiple reworkings over the centuries, but remains a prime example of Sicily's unique Arab-Norman architectural style. The interior, while impressive in scale, is essentially a marble shell whose most interesting features are the royal Norman tombs (to the left as you enter), the treasury (home to Constance of Aragon's gem-encrusted 13th-century crown) and the panoramic views from the roof.

Palermo Cathedral was built by Sicily’s Norman rulers towards the end of the 12th century, on the site of a Byzantine church that served as a mosque in the 800s. You can spot the Arabic origins in the far left column of the portico. Highlights inside include the ornate tombs of Emperor Henry VI and his son Frederick II, and a golden tiara that belonged to Frederick’s wife, Constance of Sicily.

This church echoes the Norman style that you can see at the Norman Palace since they were built around the same time. It also offers a climb to the top, where you can get some excellent views of the city. It’s a large church, so you might want to spend an afternoon to enjoy the architecture before heading out for a nice dinner in the city center.

Over the centuries, Sicily was ruled by successive waves of conquerors, each one leaving their mark on the island’s architecture, culture, and cuisine. A perfect example of this blend of cultures is the Palermo Cathedral (Cattedrale di Palermo), a fascinating patchwork of Norman, Arabic, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical architectural styles.

This magnificent mosque turned cathedral features various architectural styles from additions completed following its 12th-century consecration as a Catholic church. From the striking exterior to the wonders inside, the UNESCO-protected structure boasts plenty of astounding visual fodder for your Instagram feed. View this post on Instagram

小思文"Palermo Bishop Cathedral is a very large ancient church with a number of buildings, this Palermo Bishop is also a historical figure, the interior of the cathedral is also available to visit, many architectural styles are very unique.

The Palermo Cathedral was made for the architecture buff who will be able to spot Norman, Moorish, Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical influence all in the same incredible structure.

Main church is open to public as it should be. If you want to see the treasures, the crypt with its 30 odd tombs and go on the roof, which I can 'highly' recommend then you pay €12, €10 for seniors.

Very nice, buy the ticket for everything..the two best parts were the roof.. you walk up a very tight spiral staircase..a little taxing. Very good view from the roof. The crypt is also nice. Across the street (your ticket gets you in) if you are looking at the cathedral, it's to the left. There is a big museum, I think we paid fifteen euros for the whole thing.

Impressive huge cathedral, very stylish on the outside, rather simple in the inside. Lots of history in one place, recommended visit, but expensive if you want to go to the roof.

Royal Palace and Palatine Chapel

Ancient chapel in the Palazzo dei Normanni known for its elaborate Byzantine mosaics & paintings.

Slide 1 of 7

Designed by Roger II in 1130, this extraordinary chapel is Palermo's top tourist attraction. Located on the mid-level of Palazzo dei Normanni's three-tiered loggia, its glittering gold mosaics are complimented by inlaid marble floors and a wooden muqarnas ceiling, the latter a masterpiece of Arabic-style honeycomb carving reflecting Norman Sicily's cultural complexity.Note that queues are likely, and you'll be refused entry if you're wearing shorts, a short skirt or a low-cut top.

The Palatine Chapel inside Palermo’s Royal Palace—once the private chapel of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily—is one of the most breathtaking and important attractions in the city. The chapel seems to glow in a golden light, reflected by the ornate mosaics that cover its interior and are considered among the best in Italy.

This church is sometimes called the “palace church,” and it's nothing short of regal inside. Prepare to be awestruck gazing up at the Saracen arches covered in Byzantine mosaics.

While the chapel is significantly smaller than other churches in Palermo, its interior is by far the most exquisite! The rest of the palace is also worth a visit, and both of its gardens are lovely. If you like the golden mosaics & Arabic-Norman-Byzantine architecture, definitely visit the cathedral in nearby Monreale.

The chapel is marvelous but really small, the palace itself is nice too. The garden is small but well maintained. The royal chambers were close when we visited, so I cannot comment on them. There are a couple of exhibitions, but we were very disappointed by them. The entry fee of 15 euros is a little excessive for what it is.

Lovely place. You get to see the main concourse garden and Chapel. Sculpted dogs lying on floor? Interesting.

Catacombe dei Cappuccini

Home to 8000 corpses dating from the 16th century to 1920, dressed & divided into categories.

Slide 1 of 7

Mummified corpses line the walls at the Capuchin Catacombs, a series of underground burial chambers, housing the remains of 8,000 monks and Palermitans. Laid to rest between the mid 16th and early 20th centuries, these macabre attractions are pinned to the wall and dressed in attire specified in advance by their former occupants. Particularly spooky is the amazingly well-preserved corpse of Rosalia Lombardo, who died in 1920 at two years of age.

You might think you’ve seen catacombs in Rome and Paris, but Palermo also has an impressive collection of, erm, dead people. It’s estimated that over 8,000 people are buried at this site. It’s cheap to enter, but remember to bring a flashlight or your cell phone if you want to read some of the plaques describing some of the burial techniques.

One of the most famous sights in Palermo—albeit a rather macabre one—is the extensive network of catacombs under the city’s historic Capuchin Monastery. The subterranean Capuchin Catacombs (Catacombe dei Cappuccini) are home to thousands of mummified remains in varying states of preservation dating from the 16th to 20th centuries.

The Catacombe dei Cappuccini is an underground burial site in Palermo and makes for an interesting, if somewhat macabre, tourist destination.

Something different if you like those sort of things. Worth to see for sure. You can literary feel that you are moving back time. It could be little bit overwhelming if you are more sensitive but I recommend it.

My husband and I were confused by different info regarding whether or not this place is open so we went there today. We were so hoping it was open Unfortunately it is not open yet. ☹️ The gentleman at the office stated they are hoping next month it will be open. So maybe sometime before summer.

Personally not my favourite activity to check skulls and dead bodies, however quite interesting stories through the death bodies

Mondello Beach

Suburban white sandy beach offering pastel colored beach huts & pedal boats for hire.

Slide 1 of 11

The top weekend beach for Palermitans, Mondello is situated a 20-minute drive north from Palermo, just outside the Capo Gallo Natural Park. A spacious curve of white sand lapped by calm, transparent waters, it’s the perfect setting for swimming, tanning and admiring Mount Gallo. After a day under the rays, head to Touring Beach Cafe for snacks and cocktails on a waterfront terrace.

Mondello beach is a large, curved bay of soft sand and clear water just 30 minutes from Palermo by taxi. The scenery here is a touch nostalgic, with colourful fishing boats lounging on the sands and neo-baroque architecture as a backdrop. Everything you need is right here at this beach: restaurants, toilets, even changing rooms.

There are a number of beautiful beaches near Palermo, but if you plan on seeing one while you are visiting, make sure to check out Spiaggia di Mondello. You can take a cheap taxi or the bus system right to the boardwalk. It’s one of the cleanest beaches I’ve seen, with white sand and jade-colored water.

After getting your fill of the old city, let’s have you staying right on the beach!. From this BnB, you will have the soft golden sands of Mondello waiting just a few steps away from your door!. Complete with a sunny patio and homey bedroom, this stay will have you never wanting to check out!

One not-to-miss Palermo neighborhood is Mondello, home to the city’s crystal-clear aquamarine beach. Whether it’s beach season or not, it’s still worth a visit to stroll around the coastline and stop for a bite at one of the local seafood spots. View this post on Instagram

小思文"Mondro Beach is also a landscape in Palermo, with a good view around the beach and a location in many upscale hotels, the beach is quite large, you can see a lot of the sea, the horizon is beautiful to watch the sunrise.

Mondello Beach is a beautiful seaside resort located just a short bus ride away from Palermo. Mondello is styled in Art Noveau with a striking pier and cute pastel-colored hanging cabins.

Mondello beach is considered among the most beautiful and evocative of Palermo. It is only 10 minutes by car from Villa Lampedusa. From Hotel Villa Lampedusa's guide.

Beautiful place. The water was freezing in April. Not the best time of the year to go in the sea. I believe that in the summer is when the sea is warmer.

Beautiful beach, clear water. I went in May time with 23°c and it feels perfect. Parking wise, very busy after midday. I found a parking place and it was costly, €2/hour. The chairs and parasol was pricey too, €28 for 2 pax on weekend days. They have, however, free area if you do not mind the sun/heat and bring your own parasol.

I got here by an accident, after being rather dissapointed with Palermo itself. What a lucky mistake it was, nice view and crystal clear water. A great place to spend a day on the beach.

Cattedrale di Monreale

Cathedral

Sights & Landmarks

Landmark Norman cathedral known for its ornate cloisters & bright gold mosaics of biblical stories.

Slide 1 of 6

Inspired by a vision of the Virgin and determined to outdo his grandfather Roger II, who was responsible for the cathedral in Cefalù and the Cappella Palatina in Palermo, William II set about building the Cattedrale di Monreale, 8km southwest of Palermo. Incorporating Norman, Arab, Byzantine and classical elements, the cathedral is considered the finest example of Norman architecture in Sicily. It's also one of the most impressive architectural legacies of the Italian Middle Ages.

The mosaic-filled Monreale Cathedral (Duomo di Monreale) is both one of Italy’s most impressive masterpieces of medieval architecture and one of Sicily’s finest examples of Norman design. The triumph of Norman, Arab, Byzantine and classical elements was built by William II in 1184, and continues to dazzle visitors almost 1,000 years later.

小鱼儿2015"It is hard to imagine that this is a huge church, the whole church is very magnificent, the cathedral can see a lot of rich historical heritage, the old visitors are very many. [Scenery] a huge historical scale [Fun] very interesting

One of the nicest/most beautiful churches we have ever been too. Make sure to get the full experience, besides the church itself walking up to the top was great and you are rewarded with a spectacular view. Parking was tough but in the end we just parked our car anywhere there was a small spot, like a Sicilian would. Well worth the trip.

The cathedral itself is gorgeous and totally worth visiting, but definitely consider paying extra to get onto the roof! The little stairways through the walls are really neat and offer great raised views of Monreale & the cathedral itself. The diocesan museum is small but nice, and a quiet break from the crowds.

Only 6 miles from Palermo is the Cathedral of Monreale, the last and most stunning of the all Norman churches of Sicily and one of the architectural wonders of the Middle Ages. It was built in 1174 by William II to rival Palermo's Cappella Palatina. The exterior is fairly drab but is the cathedral's golden interior that takes your breath away. A vast cycle of mosaics covers the aisles, the choir, the transepts and all of the nave, vividly bringing to life scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Don't neglect a visit to the cloisters which boast 228 twin columns, each one different and many decorated with Islamic-inspired mosaics or reliefs.

Was this the best experience in Sicily? From a point of Land Art, certainly! Very impressive structure in the middle of nowhere. Reminds you of the village that was previously standing here. No guides or information, so better read up on it before you go. Also, you absolutely need a car to go there, no public transport. But all this adds to its harsh charm.🤩

an unusual Art Installation whereby the original street plan of Gibellina and building remains have been overlaid in a concrete cast. It's odd to walk around in an almost clinical environment whiler forgetting that where you were walking was once a real village with real people.

Town ravaged by earthquake in 1968, torn down and replaced with a concrete monument indicating buildings and streets. Not much to do or see here, but it is a good place for pictures.

First of all, the pizza is really good indead..but you (might) get treated in a different way, if you are a foreign tourist. I definitely received my pizza order later than other (pizza) orders from italian guest even though I ordered much earlier than them. The beach itself is nice but I will definitely choose another location over there..

Nice place to stay at the beach. You can rent places at the beach but you have to pick drinks an other stuff at the bar. The beach was nice an clean. The prices are a bit high (drinks and food) so just four stars. Everything else was fine we will come back but please lower your beach prices.

Theater of Segesta

Historical landmark

Sights & Landmarks

Ancient Ruins

Slide 1 of 3

The Segesta theatre, nestling in the side of Mt. Barbaro, today commands a spectacular view of the Gulf of Castellamare. First built in the late 4th to early 3rd century BCE, the theatre as it is seen today dates to the 2nd century BCE. Originally it had 29 rows of seats (the lower 21 survive) divided vertically into seven sections (kerkides) by access steps. The capacity would, therefore, have been around 4,000 spectators. The theatre is supported by a containing wall (analemmata) constructed of limestone blocks. The orchestra, scene building (once decorated with scenes connected to the pastoral god Pan), and entrances (paradoi) on either side have been lost. The theatre continues to host theatre events and Greek dramas throughout the summer months.

Amazing !! Peaceful. Stunning views of the valley. Was greeted by a friendly dog which was super cute. Definitely a must see if going to Segesta

A great Greek theatre preserved in a very good shape. It is worth the excursion, just make sure you pay the extra 2€ for the bus ride atop the hill. :)

Temple of Segesta

Historical landmark

Sights & Landmarks

Ancient Greek temple dating from the 5th century BC, set on a rural hillside with commanding views.

Slide 1 of 5

One of western Sicily's must-see attractions, the ruins of Segesta straddle a lonely hilltop less than an hour from Palermo and Trapani. The archaeological site's centrepiece, just uphill from the ticket office, is its remarkably well-preserved Doric temple, dating from around 430 BC. Another 1.5km uphill, accessed by a half-hourly shuttle (€1.50), is Segesta's other standout attraction, its 3rd-century BC Greek theatre. From here, it's a lovely 30-minute walk, with fine temple views, back down to the parking lot.

Selinunte was one of the most superb colonies of ancient Greece. Founded in the 7th century BC, the city became the rich and prosperous…

A great location overlooking the bay with views from cliffs, gorges, marble quarrys and olive farms. It is almost appropriate with the last decades represented with a viaduct from the motorway dividing up the scenery. If you can you should walk up to the theater at the top. The hike among flowers and with beautiful scenery is marvelous.

I would say the temple itself is a five star...well worth the hike up a 300 yard hill. We loved it..it will make a good Xmas card pic . Bring a tripod to get a good picture. We were sold on the amphitheater by the ticket sales guy... He said it was the best part of park..if you have been to an amphitheater before this one is small and probably not worth the bus ride up the hill, whatever you do don't walk it..it will take forever and is a steep climb..only for those with lots of time and are in extra great shape.. pay the extra for the bus up if you must go.

The temple and theatre are so beautiful. Although they are stretched on distant areas from one another, it is worth going on foot to watch the views from all corners. There is also a shuttle bus for the less adventurous.

Slide 1 of 3

I never heard of this place before, but then an owner of a bed and breakfast told me about it and I had to visit it. I need to say I'm not disappointed, it's an amazing place with an amazing view. Sadly it started raining in the middle of the tour, but nonetheless we were able to see a portion of it. The park is the biggest in the world, so prepare yourself to stay there the whole day at least. There are also shittles to carry you around, so don't worry too much about walking a lot.

The museum was small but the park is huge. Make sure to pay the extra $ for the golf cart ride to & from the far temple. Just go up to the hut in front of the museum, which is after you walk past the first set of temples. It's a long walk there and back..it took 7 minutes to get there on the golf cart. Great views.

This is a great archaeological site with plenty to see. It is let down by grumpy slow staff and a lack of organisation. The temples are wonderfully preserved and geat to see so definitely go. There are several toilets and a shuttle service between the 2 main sites. There is very little in the way of explanatory information and no staff on hand to ask. Directions are not well marked. The shuttle drivers are very pleasant. There is a a small snack bar which is remarkably good but will become very stretched if the park gets busy. Now the staff. The park opens at 9. By that time there was quite a queue including some school groups. Nobody started serving anyone until 9.10 and that was one ticket window. They were distracted because of frequent shouting exchanges with the only other staff member who kept on waving away, the growing throng of people trying to find out what the problem was. Everything stops whenever a staff member gets a mobile phone call... Which isn't great. The site though overcomes that.

We had a fantastic hike here, you could either just do the lower coastal work from one end to the other and back which would be about 12ish kilometres in total or there is a path higher up the mountain for a change of scenery on the return route, the accent is about 400m to the higher path. Both offer stunning views. Just remembered your sunscreen and carry lots of water, we only found one spot for water along the way as the other one we found had a broken tap.

Beautiful especially April when we went full of flowers

Families love this wide sandy beach, meaning it can get quite busy. There’s no cost to access it – just the usual charge for sunbeds, but bring a towel and sit on the sand and you’ll be just as comfortable. You can walk pretty far out into the shallows, providing even better views of the palm trees and a dramatic mountainous backdrop.

Oh,this stunning view and the color of the sea... However, what is kind of irritating is Thai women offering massage each 15 mins when you want to rest. During couple of hours they will come to you MANY times.

I nice place to go with your family and kids for vacation. You can see both the sea as well as the big mountain to the side which is an intresting view! Very close you'll find Zingaro Reserve which is simply amazing. However be prepared to walk a lot till those pristine beaches.

Very wide, beautiful beach. Sea water is transparent. The area is very crowded throughout the summer.

Cous Cous Fest

Slide 1 of 3

I was in San Vito from the 10th to the 22nd of September. During the Cous cous fest the town becomes a sort of "Rimini", with music on the beach from 3pm onwards, which became very loud techno/disco music from 11pm to 1.30am on Friday and Saturday. The other days the techno/disco music played until half past midnight. This happened with a special permission from the police, as the Comandante explained to me. The food is not really good. For 10 euros you can get much better stuff in any "bar" or "tavola calda". Before and during the Cous cous fest, garbage has remained for days outside the house (Via Meli), even though I took great care in following the detailed instructions provided by the authorities and repeated every evening (in Italian of course) by a car with a loudspeaker. Dogs, cats, and goats could repeatedly enjoy the rests of our meals and we could enjoy the sight of broken garbage bags. The beach was almost every day full of seaweeds and other rests from the sea. It seems that neither the municipality nor the persons who rent the beach umbrellas are responsible for cleaning the beach, which I thought is a regular service in touristic areas (at least I have seen it on the Adriatic coast). Even though the sun, the food and the people were nice, I won't go again to San Vito Lo Capo.

It's ok, but in my opinion it takes some of the authenticity of this beautiful place. Besides, you'll find lots of booths selling stuff that has nothing to do with the region or its past (e.g. Spanish beer or Swiss candy)

The cous cous we tried weren't that special.

Beautiful view from the terrace, nice appartment and the owner is lovely!

The room was nice and big, but the best here was definitely the breakfast. Breakfast made our stay here amazing, without that I would not be very happy with our stay here as the negatives overcome the positives. The Wi-fi did not work. There was also no one at the reception to solve the issue.

Very nice and excellent service

Visiting the castle was an absolute joy. I got to spend all day with my all-too-lovely girlfriend enjoying the sites and the picturesque beauty of the Italian countryside. The mandatory kissing sites were hilarious, we probably kissed 12 times within our visit. A must visit for couples and anyone looking for love.

Funierice Service Well worth a visit Using the cable car to visit the beautiful medieval village of Erice is a must. We were advised by our hotel to use this rather than drive up, as the view is better from high up and they were absolutely right. There is great parking immediately at the foot of the cableway charging just 1.5 euros for 3 hours. We struggled initially to find the parking and ended up halfway up the mountain having used the postcode from Trip Advisor but now knowing that it is actually at the cable station I would say just google the location of this and you can’t miss it. It’s just on the edge of the town. The village at the top is lovely with lots to wander around and some restaurants and cafes so leave a good 3 hours to do it justice.

Another example in Sicily where the tourist is considered a cow to spill the milk for free. 22 euro the cost of the ticket for 2 adults and 1 kid. The cabins are comfortable enough for 10 Min trip but everything look like old. At the ticket office the officer was not really polite. There is a parking lot very closed but it is toll. It is a paradox, at this point we use the car to go to Erice.

For a modest price of 9 euro/person you will get a return ticket to Erice. Nice shuttles for maximum of 8 person, not air-conditioned, but well-ventilated (was ok inside even though outside it was 38°C). Beautiful view and fast way up, there are also several bus stops nearby. Also, there are free of charge toilets (not very clean).
